Nevada County fatality: Two killed at Highway 49, La Barr Meadows Road (VIDEO)
Two male drivers involved in a head-on collision were killed on Thursday morning on Highway 49 between Alta Sierra Drive and Pingree Road, closing the road in both directions. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
A Honda CRV heading southbound shortly after 8 a.m. crossed over into northbound traffic for unknown reasons.
Two cars in the northbound fast lane avoided the vehicle but a third, a Jeep Cherokee, collided with the CRV. The Jeep Cherokee driver was alone while the CRV driver had a dog with him.
The dog survived and appeared to be fine, according to California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Greg Tassone. The dog is in animal control’s custody.

Tassone said it’s unclear if weather was a factor. “We don’t know yet,” he said. “There’s no indication it was and there no indication drugs or alcohol were a factor either.”
“We’ve been working trying to get the people stranded on 49 out of there and reroute those going down 49,” he said.
Highway 49 has been reopened. Drivers were rerouted using Dog Barr Road and La Barr Meadows Road through Alta Sierra. Those traveling southbound used La Barr Meadows Road at W. McKnight Way.
