Five Goldmine Wrestling Club athletes came away from the Freestyle State Tournament last weekend in San Jose with medals around their necks.

Matt Manuel led the way with a first-place finish after compiling an 8-0 record in the Cadet Division at 125 pounds.

Taking fourth in the Schoolboy Division was Robin Callas at 90 lbs., with Julian Purdy, Jacob Purdy and Josh Cena all finishing fifth. Julian Purdy placed in the Novice Division at 75 lbs., with Jacob Purdy and Cena winning in the Schoolboy Division at 80 and 110 lbs., respectively.

At the Greco State Wrestling Tournament in Turlock at the beginning of May, Manuel took home another first-place finish, with Callas finishing third, Jacob Purdy fourth, Tyler Szura and Julian Purdy fifth.

Nevada Union senior Luke Manuel, the state runner-up in the 152-pound weight class this year at the California Interscholastic State Championship, has qualified to wrestle at the nationals meets in freestyle and greco in Fargo, ND in late July. He qualified by placing first in the state of California Greco Meet, then second at Greco Western Regionals (Las Vegas) and first in the Northern Plains Regionals (Iowa).
