Youth Sports Report

Two Lyman Gilmore wrestlers placed at the Junior High Northern California State Tournament, held March 11 at Del Oro High School.

Placing for the third time at the meet was eighth grader Drew Hoskin, who finished second at 112 pounds. Josh Cena, a seventh grader, took fifth in the 108 pound weight class.

Goldmine Wrestling Club

begins season at tourney

The Goldmine Wrestling Club began its season with its first tournament March 18 at Casa Robles High School in which 10 wrestlers placed.

The club hosts its only home freestyle tournament of the year at Nevada Union Saturday, with wrestling beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Ali Gymnasium and the wrestling gym.


PeeWee (under 6 years old) – 1st, Matthew Corkery (50-57 lbs.), 2nd, Josh Smith (66-69)

Bantam (7-8) – 2nd, Joey Cena (43.5-50.7), 3rd Hunter Keeney (49.8-56.4)

Midget (9-10) – 1st, Will Sumner (72.9-82.2)

Novice (11-12) – 2nd, Dennis Hogan (56.6-62.1)

Schoolboy (13-14) – 2nd, Jake Purdy (81.8-86.8), 3rd, Tyler Szura (81.8-86.8), 1st, Robin Callas, (68.5-93.5)

Junior (17-18) – 1st, Brett Schauffler (152)


state tournament

Matt Manuel, a Nevada Union sophomore, captured first-place in his 125-pound weight bracket at the frosh-soph state tournament held on March 11 in Lemoore.

Manuel, who was representing the Goldmine Wrestling Club, won six straight matches to earn his gold medal in the nonqualifier state tournament. Manuel pinned Josh Van Haaster of the Central California Wrestling Club and Fresno High School in the finals. Earlier, Manuel won once by pin and won four matches by decision by a combined 48-12 score to reach the finals of the 50-man bracket.

Stampede lacrosse team records its first victory

The Stampede lacrosse team notched its first victory of the season on March 11, defeating Fair Oaks by the score of 7-2.

Once again, Patrick Konttinen led the attack with 4 goals. Nick Harris scored twice and Sky King added one.

This Saturday the Stampede travels to Orinda.

On April 1, the team hosts three teams in a round robin series of games. The Stampede will play two games, the first at 11:30 a.m. and the second at 1:30 p.m. at Bear River High School. Two other games will take place later that afternoon involving the other visiting teams.
