The annual Lyman Gilmore Wrestling Invitational really brings them out.

Thirty-five teams and a total of more than 600 wrestlers converged on the Nevada Union High School campus Saturday.

And though the hosts, the defending champion Lyman Gilmore wrestlers, didn’t take first place this time around, head coach Dave Lauell said the event was again a big hit.

“It’s a big turnout” Lauell said. “It really does make for a long a day, but we had 13 mats running this year, so we got out pretty early.”

Saturday’s wrestling hit the mats in NU’s Ali Gymnasium, in the school’s west gym and for the first time in the Miners’ brand new wrestling/multipurpose facility.

Lyman Gilmore finished third overall in team competition, finishing behind champion S.K. Price and second-place Kern.

The annual event not only offers wrestling experience for the hundreds of youngsters taking to the mat, but also serves as a fund-raising opportunity for the Lyman Gilmore program.

“It’s our main fund-raiser,” Lauell said. “We use what we make to pay for tournaments, going by bus and shoes for some of the kids.”

The Union photographer Kris Wakefield stopped by the all-day fray Saturday to capture the highs and lows of the annual event.
