What do you think of that?

After reading the “It should be all about fun” article in The Union, I thought back to my days of playing baseball and other sports. My mom was the coach, and every year we had a draft, every year my mom got the kids that no one wanted. The difference was that she had pride in us, faith in us. She got us to the championships of the league each year through hard work and positive support. No one on our team threw a curve ball until just before high school, yet we won many state and regional championships.

Parents and overzealous coaches, stay out of the kids’ way to be positive and have fun.

I’ve been a gymnastics coach for the past 19 years and would like to see some of the parents stay the heck out of the kids’ way of having fun and prospering along with it.

There seems to be too much stress put on being the best. Most kids want to please first their coaches, then their parents, then themselves. Wrong order. They should be the first.

Are they having fun? Do they like themselves? Are they proud?

Then, with the proper support mentally from parents and coaches, they will turn into the Ozzie Smiths, Cal Ripkens, Nolan Ryans and Sammy Sosas of the future.

Let the kids be kids. They are under enough strain and pressure from society to over achieve. Kids are precious and valuable. Let’s not make them grow up too fast.
