Water polo wins big
The host Nevada Union water polo team swept visiting Laguna Creek Wednesday.
The boys won 18-6 on four of Jesse Kirkpatrick’s goals.
Heather Serr scored a match-high five goals to lead the Lady Miners to a 8-4 win.
In the boys match, Jon Dorfman and Matt Haas notched a hat trick each.
NU’s Galen Dobbins, Quincy Van Vleck and Cody Naylor chipped in two goals apiece.
Jon Huffy and Ryan Stefani also scored in the win.
Iain Hicks had eight blocks and five steals in goal for NU.
For the Lady Miners, Claire Thomson hit the back of the net twice, and Kayleigh Knight added another.
Chloe Weisman had six saves in the win.
Cross Country win Center meet
Matt Freitas turned in a time of 17 minutes, 10 seconds over the three-mile course to lead the Nevada Union boys cross country to the Metro Conference Center Meet ( No. 2) title at Sierra College Wednesday.
The Miner boys (12-0 overall) finished with 57 points to take the team title. The Lady Miners (10-2) finished two points behind first-place Woodland (30) to finish second
For the boys, NU’s Trevor Robertson took fourth on the three-mile course with a time of 17:52. Brian Dell (18:31) finished seventh, Ivan Griessert (19:23) took 18th and Tyler Freeman (20:23) came in 27th.
Whitney Stevenson (21:12) finished fourth overall to lead the Lady Miners.
Karly Powell (21:35) was right behind in fifth, Caitlin Schultheiss (21:46) was sixth.
Jarrette earns football honor
Former Nevada Union football standout Owen Jarrette was named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference south division’s player of the week for Sept. 16-12.
The Principia College (Elsah, Ill.) wide receiver caught five passes for 109 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-37 win over Macalester College (St. Paul. Minn.).
Jarrette, who played for NU from 1996-99 and earned all Capital Athletic League honors as running back, also returned four kickoffs for 101 yards in the win.
Run Through the Colors
The Sierra Nevada Group of the Sierra Club will be host to the 11th Annual Run Through the Colors fun run Oct. 20.
The event will feature runs of 5K and 10K as well as a 5K walk. The entry fee is $25. There will be a $5 discount for those who register by Friday.

The Nevada Union Junior Miners Football and Cheer teams traveled to Roseville to take on the Oakmont Junior Vikings in Sacramento Youth Football League action last Saturday.
