Turkey Trot hosts thousands, finalizes Gold Country GP

On Thanksgiving day the clouds parted, the sun came out and around 1,800 people took to Hooper Stadium at Nevada Union High School for the seventh annual Michael Bratton II Turkey Trot.

Taking the top spot in the men’s 5K was Nevada Union senior David French, of Chicago Park, finishing in 17 minutes and 16.8 seconds. In the women’s 5K it was Leigh Collins, of Grass Valley, crossing the finish line first with a time of 20:37.8.

In the 10K, Makie Ohler, of Nevada City, won the women’s race with a time of 45:47.5. John Wiley, of New York, was the first to finish in the men’s 10K with a time of 35:50.8.

Not only did the 5K and 10K runs promote a good cause, they also finalized the 2012 Gold Country Grand Prix age group winners.

In the men’s 70 and over age group (AG) Ron Gross, of Nevada City, won the grand prix (GP) with 87 points. Lynne Hurell, of Grass Valley, took the women’s 70 and over GP title with 100 points.

In the women’s 60-69 AG Genielle Odom, of Grass Valley, was named the GP winner with 46 points, and Michael Buzbee, of
Yuba City, won the men’s 60-69 AG with 83 points.

Anne King, of Nevada City, is the women’s 50-59 AG winner with an impressive 95 points. Steve Bond, of Nevada City, will take the 50-59 AG title with 84 points.

Rob Taylor, of Nevada City, scored 104 points to win the 40-49 AG. Kerri Latter, of Cedar Ridge, tallied 81 points to win the women’s 40-49 AG.

Bjorn Jones, of Grass Valley, hit the century mark with 100 points to win the 30-39 AG. Melanie Powis, of Grass Valley, took the women’s 30-39 AG with 54 points.

Brooke Murphy, of Penn Valley, ran her way to 66 points and the women’s 19-29 AG title. Ryan Meacher, also out of Penn Valley, won the men’s 19-29 AG with 51 points.

Parker Scanlon, of Grass Valley, took the men’s 15-18 AG with 52 points. Joy Castro-Wehr is the women’s 15-18 AG winner with 54 points.

Devon Cloud, of Grass Valley, won the men’s 11-14 AG with a whopping 107 points. Devon Thomas, of Grass Valley, is the women’s 11-14 AG title holder with 58 points.

Lexie Madigan, of Nevada City, amassed 77 points on her way to the women’s 10 and under AG title. Davis Olsen, of Nevada City, scored 85 points on his way to winning the men’s 10 and under AG.

The Gold Country Grand Prix awards ceremony for the 2012 season will be held Jan. 13 at Twin Cities Church in Grass Valley.
