The Trkac racing team is off and running in 2015, picking up where they left off last year — the front of the pack.

The running team, comprised mostly of Nevada County residents, opened the 2015 season at the 39th Bidwell Classic in Chico March 7. Lynne Hurrell highlighted the team’s effort, setting a national record in her age group (80-and-older) in the road 5K with a time of 28 minutes, 16 seconds.

In all, the Trkac team brought 19 team members to compete in either the 5K or half marathon races at the Bidwell Classic, 14 of which finished in the top-3 in their age group. The team tallied 12 All-American standard times along the way.

In the Bidwell 5K, Herve Pastre (19:13; men’s 65-69), Inka Mims (19:39; women’s 50-54), Stefanie Roberts (22:07; women’s 40-44), Brian Dowling (23:27; men’s 60-64), James Beckett (25:00; men’s 75-79) and Terrie Horlick (33:18; women’s 65-69) all finished in first place in their respective gender and age groups. Robert Warner (19:45; men’s 55-59) and Skylar Mims (23:11; women’s 10-14) each placed second in their respective groups.

In the half marathon, Makie Ohler (1:27:58; women’s 50-54) and Drue Mathies (1:47:54; men’s 65-69) each placed first in their respective groups.

Following the Bidwell Classic, two Trkac runners competed in the National Masters Indoor Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Mims and Beckett represented the Trkac team well with two first place finishes and three second place finishes combined.

Mims became a national champion in her age group in the 800-meter race, placing first with a time of 2:45.32. She also placed second in the 3,000 (11:28.57), and second in the mile (5:51.32). Mims’ times in the mile and 3,000 are fourth fastest in the world for her age group.

Beckett finished first in the mile with a time of 7:00.7 to become an age group national champion as well. His mile time is currently the fastest indoor mile in the world in his age group. Beckett was also second in the 3,000 with a time of 14:38.16.

There were 900 runners at the national championships, where eight world records and 29 American records were set.

Additionally, the Trkac team has three runners, Rose Asquith, Alex Danner and Ohler, that have qualified for the Boston Marathon April 20. Ohler is also planning on running in the New York Marathon in November.

The team as a whole remains focused on the World Masters Track Championships in Lyon, France in August, recently adding Steve Conrad to coach sprinters, jumpers and throwers.
