Trio of junior teams advance

Three youth football teams qualified for today’s first round of the playoffs, including the Junior Miners pee wees and midgets, and the Junior Bruins junior midgets.

The Junior Miners pee wees, who host No. 8 Del Oro at 1 p.m., enter the postseason ranked first.

The pee wees are led on offense by a running back quartet of Stone Menton-Sander, Nathan Dickinson, Tanner Vallejo and Ian Davis. Quarterback Kyle Cota played a large role in the Junior Miners’ 7-1 regular season, as did wide receiver Austin Marks and linebackers Miguel Espinosa and Hank Humphers.

Josh Cena’s all-purpose play helped the Junior Miners midgets finish the regular season at 4-4. Ranked seventh, they host Natomas at 5 p.m.

Cena spent most of his time this season at running back, safety and tight end.

The No. 2 Junior Bruins junior midgets play at 4 p.m. at No. 7 Roseville.

Their 40-0 win Oct. 21 against the Junior Miners gave them the second seed in the playoffs and clinched the division title.
