Here is a capsule look at how Nevada County entries – Bear River juniors Nicole Jackson and Rachel Welz, along with Nevada Union senior Nancy Gutierrez – are seeded coming into the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Track and Field Championships starting today at Modesto College:
Girls High Jump – Welz is seeded third with her qualifying 5-4. She qualified for the state meet last year. Who to watch: Susie Jackson, Napa, qualified at 5-8; Nicole Williams, Laguna Creek, qualified at 5-6 and is the defending section champion; Jessica Rader, Calaveras, has cleared 5-5; Katie Waldie, Union Mine, and Larun Johnson, Vallejo, have cleared 5-4.
Girls 300-meter low hurdles – Jackson is seeded fifth at 47.16 and ran a season best 46.35 at the Sacramento Meet of Champions April 29; Welz qualified 14th at 48.65. Who to watch: A strong field with seven qualifiers who have run under 47.0. Tia Jones, Franklin, who qualified No. 1 at 45.23, shares the section’s season-best of 45.06 with Vanice Colbert, Fairfield. Maxwell has run 46.04, Brewer has run 46.55, Lodi freshman Samantha Balentine 46.56 and Vallejo’s Natasha Kenion 46.69. Jones qualified for state last year.
Girls 100-meter hurdles – Jackson is seeded eighth with a qualifying time of 16.17; Welz is 18th at 17.02. Who to watch out for: Tenise Brewer, Florin sophomore, 15.0; Candise Maxwell, Stagg, qualified at 16.36, but has a season best of 14.14 and qualified for state last year.
Girls 100-meter dash – Jackson is seeded 20th at 13.57. Who to watch: Sharrina Lofton, Fairfield, qualified at 12.16 and her season best is 12.02; Vallejo senior Samantha Tansil, the No. 9 seed coming in, is the defending section champion.
Girls Long Jump – Welz qualified sixth with a school record 17-61Ú2. Who to watch: Benicia sophomore Amber Purvis qualified at 19-01Ú2; Rachel Kuczynski qualified at 17-101Ú4 and has gone 18-43Ú4. In all, 14 jumpers in this field have surpassed 17 feet this season.
Girls Shot Put: Gutierrez is seeded 12th at 35-1, but has a personal best 36-41Ú4. Who to watch: Colleen Lenehan, Oak Ridge, qualified No. 1 at 40-91Ú2 and comes in as the defending section champion.
Girls Discus Throw – Gutierrez is seeded 21st at 105-3. Who to watch: Lauren Guerrieri, Davis, qualified at 147-7; Kayla Xavier, Johansen, comes in at 139-7 and as a 2005 state meet qualifier.
