Tournament of Champions opens play today

The top teams from area Little League programs begin battle in the annual Tournament of Champions, which is slated to start today with the Area 2 Majors TOC at Bear River Little League.

Eleven teams, including champions and runners-up from each Area 2 league, will square off in 10 games during the next seven days to determine the District 11 champion.

Teams from Bear River, Foresthill, Grass Valley, Nevada City, Penn Valley and Sierra Foothills (Colfax) little leagues will compete.

The tournament’s first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 5 p.m. today, when the Grass Valley league champion takes the field with the Penn Valley league runner-up.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Bear River Little League President John Karas said of hosting the tournament. “Last year, we did not host a tournament. We had a year off. So we’re happy to be hosting again and we’re looking forward to it.”

Today’s second game, between the Nevada City champs and the Grass Valley runner-up, is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Two games per night will follow this week and then one semifinal game will be played Monday and the championship scheduled for Tuesday. (See the complete Tournament of Champions schedule in the “Scoreboard,” page 3).

Action in the Junior level tournament begins Saturday at Auburn Little League. Only league champions compete at the Junior and Senior levels.

Saturday’s first game in the Juniors Division will pit Sierra Foothills against Grass Valley at 4 p.m., followed by Foresthill and Tri-City at 7 p.m.

Senior TOC competition begins Friday at Lincoln Little League, where Tri-City and Nevada City square off at 7 p.m.
