Tennis players win age groups at Rio Del Oro Open

Grass Valley teaching pros Tom Isaac and Greg Cicatelli won their respective age group divisions recently at the Rio Del Oro Open Senior Tennis Tournament.

Cicatelli doubled up to capture both the men’s 55- and 60-year-old singles titles, while Isaac won the men’s 50-year-old singles during the National Tennis Rating Program event held at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.

Isaac, who came in as a No. 2 seed, rallied to defeat Terry Sullens 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in his semifinal and then defeated No. 1 seed Roy Rocero in the final 7-5, 6-0.

Cicatelli, the No. 2 seed in the men’s 55 bracket, defeated top-seed Vernon Sahara in the final 7-5, 6-3. Cicatelli, 59, won the men’s 60 final against Jeffrey Coupe 6-2, 6-3.

David Eubanks of Grass Valley also reached the men’s 4.5 division final, where he dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Rosauro Lacap.


Jr. Miners earn Shrine Bowl selections

Five Jr. Miner football players and four Jr. Miner cheerleaders have all been selected to participate in the Sacramento (SYF) Youth Shrine Bowl, which benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children.
