What: CIF State Wrestling Tournament

When: State champions will be crowned in 14 weight classes, with action beginning today at 8 a.m., and place winners decided throughout Saturday afternoon. The championship matches will be at 7 p.m.



Where: University of Pacific, Stockton.




Cost: Tickets for today’s three rounds of action are $7 for adults. Seniors, high school students, and children are $5. Saturday’s morning and afternoon rounds are $8 for adults, and $6 for students, children, and seniors. The Finals have reserved seating for $16, $14, and $12. General Admission is $8.

Who to look for: Nevada Union 127-pound wrestler Anthony Archuleta will be trying to place at the state tournament for the third year in a row, having placed third as a sophomore for Calvary Chapel, and fourth last year for Sultana High School.

Archuleta, a Penn Valley resident who won the Natomas subsection and the Sac-Joaquin section tournaments, will face Olrand senior John Orsuna in the first round this morning. Orsuna finished second at the North section tournament last weekend.

In the opposite side of the 127-pound tournament from Archuleta is senior Darrell Vasquez of Bakersfield. Since its inception in 1973, the California state tournament has yet to produce a wrestler who won four titles. Vasquez, one of 10 wrestlers to win three state titles, will be trying to make history with a fourth title today and Saturday.
