Sports Shorts: Pankration tournament set; Former NFL players on hand for BBQ

Perry’s Athletic Training Center will host the 2008 Northern California Championships III Saturday.

Owner Jay Perry said more than 30 pankration fighters and kickboxers are registered, although many more are expected from “all corners of California.”

The tournament is open to all styles and schools, with divisions for men, women and teens, who fight in the intermediate to advanced level only.

Former NFL players on hand for Saturday BBQ

A Sports Barbecue is being held 4-7 p.m. Saturday at Nevada Union High School’s Hooper Stadium, featuring former NFL players.

Some of the former pros include Ted Popson (San Francisco 49ers), Norm Johnson (four-time Pro Bowl kicker) and Honor Jackson (New York Giants).

This event is sponsored by NEO, the Coalition for a Drug Free Nevada County, Community Recovery Resources, and Friday Night Live. Community Recovery Resources Alumni will be serving some tasty food at no cost.

Kids will have the opportunity to win prizes and participate in fun, competitive games. Some of the Retired NFL players will tell motivational and inspirational stories to encourage Nevada County’s youth to make positive life choices and to set life goals.
