Local cheerleaders chase national championships

Both of Rising Starz Gymnastics’ cheerleading squads are headed for Anaheim and the National Cheerleading Competition on March 24.

And to fund the trip, the cheer teams’ booster club is hosting a showcase at 11 a.m. today at Nevada Union High School’s Ali Gymnasium.

The Quake All-Starz will be competing at nationals for the third consecutive year, including their varsity squad that consists of 16 members between the ages of 10-17 years old. The junior varsity squad includes team members ranging in ages 7-11 years.

The varsity has been preparing for nationals by practicing six hours per week, while the junior varsity has dedicated four hours a week to their preparations.

Today’s event offers the teams an opportunity to showcase their stuff for the community. Nevada Union’s cheerleaders will also be on hand, as well members of Rising Starz’ competitive boys gymnastics team.

A Taco Night fund-raising event is also set for 4:30-7:30 p.m. March 11 at Charlie’s Angels Cafe and a community send-off for the teams is set for 7 p.m. March 22 at Round Table Pizza.
