Warren beats top-ranked Whitfield

TUNICA, Miss. – Rau’Shee Warren beat top-ranked Rayonta Whitfield in the light flyweight division Friday at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, moving him one step closer to the Summer Games.

The referee stopped the bout 1:19 into the second round as the 17-year-old Cincinnati native built a 25-5 lead.

“I had to let him know who the best 106-pounder is,” Warren said. “I know I’m the youngest and he’s the oldest, but he’s the one I was coming for.”

Warren was ranked seventh in the division. He won a Junior Olympic title in 2002.
