Sports Short: Softball

The Benchmark Thermal “Heat” Mens’ 60-year-old softball team kicked off the New Year by taking second place in a World Championship Qualifier in Southern California.

The Heat, competing in the 60 Major Division, were 4-1 losing in the championship game to the Southern California “Classics” – a perennial powerhouse.

The Heat were led in hitting by Guy Selleck (.750 batting average), Bob Hannah (.666), Mel Pape (.580), Wayne Gibson (.510) and George Caulking (.475).

The second-place finish qualifies the Heat for the World Championships in Mobile, Ala. The team will also travel to Blaine, Minn., Des Moines, Iowa, Plano, Tex., Kent, Wash. And St. George, Utah.

On Feb. 15-16, the Heat travels to Palm Springs for a World Series qualifier. In 2002, the team won one world title and took third and fifth places in two other world championship tournaments.

The team consists of five Nevada County players, five players from the Bay Area, three from Sacramento and two from Modesto.

The Heat will play between 130-150 games in 2003, ending the season in Las Vegas in November.
