South County fitness studio offers good vibes with proven results

“Come on in. It’s Happy Hour,” read the sign that hung in the window of a new local dance and fitness studio. That’s all it took to convince South County resident Linda Workman to go ahead and give it a try. Now one year later, attending Reform Dance and Fitness’ Zumba classes is one of the best decisions she’s made.

“I’ve been going for a year, and I love it,” Workman said. “I saw the sign one day in the parking lot. ‘Come on in. It’s Happy Hour.’ I thought, ‘Cool,’ and just showed up, and that was it. I go three to four times a week and went from a size 12 to a size eight.”

Reform Dance and Fitness is located on Combie Road just outside Lake of the Pines. Owner and instructor Kelly Brown had nothing but positive things to say about how her fitness venture has blossomed and continuously reshaped lives, literally, of members in the community.

“I was teaching at Lake of the Pines Sports Lounge, and the classes kept getting bigger and bigger,” said Brown, who has called Grass Valley her home for nine years. “Word of mouth and Facebook have really helped. Classes used to be eight to 10 people in LOP, and now, the average here is 10-15, sometimes up to 20 or more.”

The studio has been Brown’s active site for all of her fitness classes for the past 16 months and has served well to accommodate her rise in clientele. Reform Dance and Fitness currently offers Zumba, which engages members in upbeat dances to Latin and International music, RIPPED, a resistance and cardio training class, which according to the website “masterfully combines Resistance, Intervals, Power, Plyometrics, Endurance, and Diet,” and private dance lessons made available though J & J Performing Arts.

The business is unique in that each instructor is her own contractor who rents studio time for the classes she teaches, explained Brown. Each individual class session cost $5, and package incentives are also available. The concept behind all classes is to take into consideration how a person thinks and as a result, enable them to “reform” themselves physically. Dancing is fun and not viewed as a workout, but that’s precisely the point. Piloxing will be the newest option made available to fitness enthusiasts at the studio next month.

“I was tired of going to the gym, tired of walking around the lake,” Workman said. “Thank you, Lord, found something. It works every muscle in your body while you’re dancing. I’ve never seen anybody wiggle like that girl (Brown). Her energy level is awesome. She teaches three classes a day and teaches every class like it’s her first one. Not only is she physically fit, but she’s spiritually fit.”

According to other members of Brown’s classes there is much more satisfaction to be had than simply weight loss. They serve as an alternative to physical therapy, provide better mental health and a feeling of community, as well as create opportunity for friendships.

“I strive to keep it exciting and be in a great mood,” added Brown. “I love the people who work here. They understand it’s not about them. I can’t decide (which class is my favorite). I love to teach all of them. The ladies have been supportive. It’s all about the smiles on their faces after they achieve their goals. There’s ladies in here who have lost 40 to 70 pounds in a year, and they don’t feel like they’re working out.”

So whether staying active and healthy this summer means going to the gym, laps in the pool, running, cycling or just getting together with a bunch of friends to dance, make sure to take it to the limit because as Brown says, “If you don’t sweat, what’s the point?”

“You get your heart rate up, but it’s truly about having fun, not working out,” explained Brown. “We’re just dancing, learning different styles. It’s kind of like getting together with your girlfriends for a party.”
