Nearly 90 participants stepped to the line at Bear River High School for the Bear River 5K on Aug. 1, marking the sixth competition on the Gold Country Grand Prix’s 11-race schedule.

Bjorn Jones, of Grass Valley, claimed first place overall in the men’s race, completing the 3.1 mile course that took runners through parts of south Nevada County in a time of 19 minutes, 6 seconds.

Jones was challenged for the top spot by Sergio Higareda, who came in 6 seconds after Jones and in second place overall.

Amanda Bratton, of Grass Valley, won the women’s 5K race, finishing in a time of 22:58. Taking second place overall was 14-year-old Sheriane Greene with a time of 23:54.

Age group (AG) winners in the women’s Bear River 5K were Taylor Martin (27:23) in the 10-and-under AG, Greene in the 11-14 AG, Erika Winters (28:31) in the 15-18 AG, Bratton in the 19-29 AG, Jennifer Palmer (25:07) in the 30-39 AG, Phyllis Livingston (26:18) in the 40-49 AG, Anne King (26:51) in the 50-59 AG, Terrie Horlick (35:10) in the 60-69 AG, and Carole Browning (35:44) in the 70-and-older AG.
