The Gold Country Grand Prix racing series returns from a 35-day hiatus Saturday with the ninth annual Freedom Run 5K held at Nevada Union High School.

“It’s a nice way to to start the holiday with a fun activity, and it’s a beautiful course,” said race organizer Frank Castro-Wehr.

One of the biggest draws of the Freedom Run, which is annually held on the Fourth of July, is the opportunity for a “pure” trail run, said Castro-Wehr.

“What’s different about our race is the emphasis on the trails,” he said. “There are a number of hairpin turns, times where you run between trees and varying hills.”

The 5K (3.1 miles) course is almost completely on trails that traverse the woods near Nevada Union High School and Sierra College.

At the 2014 Freedom Run 5K it was Nevada Union alumnas Garrett Migliozzi finishing in a time of 16 minutes, 17 seconds and edging out Jack Bordoni at the finish line to win the men’s race. Makie Ohler won the 2014 women’s 5K in a time of 21:51.

While the event is a part of the Gold Country Grand Prix racing series and some runners will be racing with the hopes of adding to their grand prix point totals, Castro-Wehr added it’s also a family event.

“Every year we see several family reunion groups come out and run together,” Castro-Wehr. “Walk or run we encourage everyone to come out and participate.”

Proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Nevada Union cross country team as well as the NU track and field team, said Castro-Wehr.

“It’s a great way to start the holiday and a great way to support local runners,” said Castro-Wehr.

The Freedom Run 5K gets started at 8 a.m. on Saturday, the Fourth of July, and is still open for registration. There will be race day registration from 7-7:45 a.m. The cost to register is $25 for runners and $20 for walkers and kids 10 and under.
