For more than a decade, the Freedom Run 5K has been helping Nevada County kick off Fourth of July festivities, joining the traditional staples such as the Independence Day Parade, fireworks, grilling and American flag inspired bathing suits that usually highlight the national holiday.

This year is no different.

The annual Fourth of July 5K is set for Tuesday at Nevada Union High School. The race is a fundraiser for the Nevada Union track and cross country teams, and marks the sixth race in the 10-race Gold Country Grand Prix running series.

“All abilities are welcome,” race director Matthew Greene said. “There will be walkers and joggers all the way up to where you have some really good runners that show up.”

In recent years, the Freedom Run has been dominated by Jack Bordoni, of Los Altos, who has been the first to cross the finish line in five of the last six years, including the last two. The last time Bordoni didn’t finish first at the Freedom Run was in 2014, when he was edged by Nevada Union graduate Garrett Migliozzi, who now runs for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s track and cross country teams.

The 3.1 mile course takes participants along the Nevada Union cross country trail, which traverses the woods near the high school as well as the surrounding areas.

“You get a little bit hills, a little bit flats, a little bit downhill, a little bit grass, a little bit of dirt, a little bit of pavement and a little bit of track,” said Greene.

The race gets started at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning and has usually garnered between 100 and 150 participants.

Registration is currently open for the Freedom Run 5K. Forms can be found at http://www.nurunners.com. Race day registration will be available at the event from 7-7:45 a.m.

The Freedom Run marks the start of the back half of the 2017 Gold Country Grand Prix season with the Bear River 5K (Aug. 5), Kellermann Batwa Challenge 5K/10K (Aug. 26), NEO Empire Challenge (Oct. 14) and Michael Bratton II Turkey Trot (Nov. 24) to follow.
