Rossi hits top times for series test

Alexander Rossi led Eurointernational teammates Giancarlo Vilarinho and David Ostella at the top of the Formula BMW Americas time sheets at the Formula BMW Americas official test held Tuesday and Wednesday at New Jersey Motorsports Park, Thunderbolt Raceway, Millville, N.J.

Completing more than 200 miles over the two days, Rossi’s best lap of 1:17.052 minutes around the newly completed 2.25-mile, 10-turn circuit was set on the morning of the second day with cooler air. Not only is Rossi the series point leader, but he also has been the fastest driver in every official test session held this season.

“Being a new circuit for the series and upcoming race this was an important test to sort things out”, Rossi said. “We accomplished that very well, I was very pleased with the whole Eurointernational team. Once again, they are so well prepared and everyone executed perfectly. Thunderbolt is smooth, fast and challenging because there are very few visual references and several corners lack exit curbs. The key to winning here is not to overdrive and make no mistakes.”

Rossi has an excellent chance to clinch the 2008 Formula BMW Americas championship when the series returns to the New Jersey track on Sept. 27-28 for Rounds 13, 14 and 15. Currently leading Ricardo Favoretto by 32 points, Rossi needs only to net an additional 11 points to become the first American Formula BMW Champion. With 42 points available at the final two rounds at the Brazilian Grand Prix in November, a 43 point lead following Thunderbolt also will make Rossi the first driver in Formula BMW Americas history to win the title before the final race.
