Rio slips one by Miners

A goal that ricocheted off both posts before going in proved to be the difference, as Rio Americano defeated NU 1-0 in Wednesday’s CAL league opener in the rain and mud at Rio Americano.

The loss to last year’s CAL runner-ups drops NU to 2-2 overall.

“We have a very young team, they have a very good team,” NU coach Mike Voss said. “We had a ball out there today.”

The weather caused Voss to substitute his line of attack every 10 minutes to keep fresh legs in the contest. Goalie Jamiee Pau had 14 saves for the Miners Wednesday.

Freshman Chrystal Conklin on defense and sophomore midfielder Lauren McQuiston was mentioned by Voss as playing well for the Miners, who next travel to Casa Roble on Friday.
