Remembrance ride

Bull riders, bull fighters along with family, friends and fans of Donny Martin came together Sunday to celebrate his life and enjoy his passion for bullfighting at the Penn Valley Rodeo grounds in the inaugural Donny Martin Memorial Bull Ride.

Martin, who was born in Nevada County, was a bull-fighting favorite of rodeo fans for more than 20 years and had been the 2007 Bull fighter of the Year by the California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association.

He died July 1 from injuries sustained in being knocked unconscious by a loose bull in Bishop on Father’s Day.

Sunday’s show, which is planned to be an annual event, was put together in conjunction with the Outlaw Rodeo Company of Sheridan to raise funds for his family and the Donny Martin Scholarship Fund.

Those interested in making a contribution may do so at P.O. Box 1027, Cottonwood, CA 96022.
