Angels take title at Senior Games

The California Angels, a men’s 65-year-old softball team, won the World Senior Games championship in St. George, Utah, Oct. 8-12.

The Angels, included Gold Country Senior Softball players Joel Guthrie, Bob Hannah and Bob Swarthout, went 7-1 in tournament play. Hannah hit .737 for the tourney as one of the team’s top hitters.

The Angels, which own a 64-28 record on the year and a seven tournament titles, will compete in the Senior Softball World Championships this week in Phoenix.

The team, which typically hits the field from February through December each year, will likely play another 20 games before this season’s campaign is complete.

In the women’s 60-division, Judy Packham and Geri Pape, both local players, played for a Reno-based team that finished fifth in the Senior Games. Packham hit .650, and Pape .500, for the tournament.
