The No. 7 seeded Golden Fighters stole the Nevada County Adult Sports Association’s C-League basketball crown from No. 3 seed Old School Sunday night at the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building.

The Golden Fighters won the C-League championship and the coveted gray and gold T-shirts in just their first finals appearance.

The Golden Fighters upset Old School, beating the defending C-League champs, 44-40.

In the first half, Old School got out the gates early, gaining a seven-point lead over the Golden Fighters. But the Golden Fighters fought back, going on a nine-point run and grabbing a six point edge at the half.

In the second half, the teams battled closely as the lead changed five times, until Golden Fighters player Addison Wolf connected with Josh Sawi on the lower block for a post up, turn around lay up to give The Golden Fighters a one point lead at the 1:47 mark. Old School would never retake the lead after that.

The Golden Fighters’ top scorers were Addison Wolf and Nate Sawi, each with 12 points. Old School’s leading scorers were Jeff Conklin (17 points) and Logan Edwards (10 points).

“The players came together as a team. We played solid defense plus a lot of ball movement,” said Golden Fighters player Josh Sawi. “Nate Sawi and Devon (Cloud) really came through in the clutch. The speed of Addison and the old-time wisdom of our coach Andrea, without him we couldn’t of got it done. Our defense generates our offense.

“Addison has supreme court vision he just saw that there was an open man underneath the basket and he made the right choice. Instead of going for the low percentage 3, he went for the high percentage down in the low post. The defenders ran to the corners cause we had a high percentage 3-point shooter out there and fortunately we had a guy who was on the low post and Addison snuck in and fed him the ball and it turned out to benefit us.”
