Bear River’s track and field athletes put forth a strong showing at the Pioneer Valley League Championships and took home multiple individual league titles last week.

Leading the Bruins’ charge was Sarah Aanenson, who won four events, including the girls 100-meter dash, the 200 dash, the long jump and the triple jump. The talented junior won the 100 in a time of 12.67 seconds, just edging out Center’s Mayleen Hughes (12.72). In the 200, Aanenson finished with a time of 25.89, again just ahead of Hughes (26.54). Aanenson won the long jump comfortably with a mark of 18 feet, 0.25 inches. The next closest competitor was Colfax’s Natalie Lundberg at 16-10.00. In the triple jump, Aanenson’s mark was 34-01.50, which was more than a foot better than the second place finisher.

Bear River’s Julia Pisenti was a standout in the throwing events. The freshman won the girls shot put title with a heave of 32-02.00. She also won the discus event with mark of 98-03.

Distance runner Grace McDaniel also claimed a league title for the Bruins. The junior placed first in the 3,200 race with a time of 13:14.80, which was more than 20 seconds faster than the second place finisher. McDaniel also placed third in the 1,600 race.

Other Bruins who earned top three finishes were Matthew Rodriguez who placed second in the boys pole vault (13-10.00), Grace Van Winkle who was second in the girls pole vault (6-11.00), Kayla Scheda who placed third in the girls high jump (4-05), and Chase Rauhuff who took third in the 400 (52.68).

“I think our kids represented real well against the PVL,” said Bear River head coach Dan Buxton. “Our competition was pretty strong this year.”

In all, the Bruins grabbed seven individual event championships. Bear River’s girls squad placed third as a team, and the boys squad took fifth in the six-school league. Center won the boys team title, and Colfax claimed the girls team championship.

Bear River’s track and field athletes will now turn their attention to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V Championships which will be held today and Friday at Cesar Chavez High School.
