PREP ROUNDUP: Miners, Bruins claim volleyball league championships

The boys volleyball teams from Nevada Union and Bear River were darn near untouchable in league play this season.

The Miners and Bruins both wrapped their league slates this week with undefeated records and will now gear up for the playoffs, which get going next Monday.

The Miners knocked off Rio Linda, 25-17, 25-10, 25-20, on Wednesday to finish 10-0 against league foes and claim the banner in the Foothill Valley League. NU dropped just three sets across the 10 league matches.

Nevada Union got strong play from Carter Depue with nine blocks and six kills. Preston Nowak added eight kills and Jordan finished with five kills in the win.

It’s the third straight league title for the Miners, who won at least a share of the Sierra Foothill League title the past two seasons.

At 24-2 overall, the Miners are hoping for a high seed when the Division I playoffs open next week.

Bear River’s squad closed their run through the Golden Empire League with a straight set win over Dixon, 25-11, 25-15, 25-11, on Tuesday.

Leading the Bruins against Dixon was Jace Rath with 15 kills and four aces. Brad Smith added four aces and four kills, and Weston Prosser chipped in four aces to go with 23 assists.

The Bruins went 12-0 against their GEL combatants, only dropping one set to a league foe all season.

Bear River (22-5) head into the playoffs on an 11-match winning streak.
