PREP BASEBALL: Miners top Channel Islands to close out Lion’s tourney

Nevada Union’s baseball team closed out its run through the Lion’s Tournament in San Diego with 6-2 victory over Channel Islands.

The Miners jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Zach Erlich scored on an error and James Nolen scored on an RBI double by Evan Hicks.

NU added two more runs in the third, getting an RBI double from Nick Noll, who would later score on an error.

The Miners made 6-0 in the fourth inning when Bennett King ripped an RBI single, and Matt Deschaine followed with an RBI sacrifice fly.

That was plenty of run support for Hicks, who pitched a complete game. The junior allowed just five hit and two earned runs while striking out four and walking none.

The Miners (11-9, 4-5 Foothill Valley League) opened the four-day tourney with a loss to Southwest San Diego, but then ran off three straight wins coming against Eagle River (Alaska), Capital Christian (Sacramento) and Channel Islands (Oxnard).

Next up for the Miners is a league bout against Lincoln (9-9, 5-4 FVL) on Tuesday. The Miners are a game back of Lincoln, which is tied with Ponderosa (10-10, 5-4) and Placer (14-6, 5-4) for second place in the league standings. Oakmont (19-3, 7-2) is in first place.
