ALUMNI NOTEBOOK: Impressive season comes to an end for Bear River grad Matt Lopez
Matt Lopez, a 2016 Bear River graduate, had his stellar sophomore season with the Sierra College baseball team come to a close last week after the Wolverines fell to College of San Mateo in a three-game regional playoff series.
Sierra dropped the first game, 4-3, then rallied to take the second game, 4-2, before falling 11-10, in the third contest.
Lopez, a first baseman, was a force at the plate during the series, going 3-for-11 with two home runs, six RBIs, two walks and two runs scored.
For the season, Lopez started all 42 or Sierra’s games, hit .391 with seven home runs, 53 RBIs and 49 runs scored. Lopez led the team in batting average and hits (70), and was second in RBIs and home runs.
Across his two seasons at Sierra, Lopez played in 89 games, batted .372 with 136 hits, 25 doubles, five triples, 17 home runs and 103 RBIs. In 366 at-bats, he struck out only 36 times.
Sierra College wraps the season with a 30-12 overall record.
During Lopez’s time at Bear River, he led the Bruins to the playoffs and was an All-Pioneer Valley League selection in his senior year.
