Prep roundup: NU drops league game to Grizzlies, Magnolia girls capture Jr. High title

The Nevada Union girls volleyball team is off to a slow start to its Sierra Foothill League season, dropping a Monday night game to Rocklin and another Wednesday to Granite Bay, 25-21, 25-13, 25-22.

The Lady Miners have been hampered by injuries to some key players, said Marco Salcedo. But, the bench has stepped up and is giving the NU a fighting chance against some of the tougher teams in the SFL.

The Lady Miners are back at it Monday when they host Del Oro.

Del Oro 9, Nevada Union 0

The Lady Miner tennis team ran up against the Golden Eagles Wednesday and when all was said and done Del Oro soared off with a sweep of the days events.

Giving Del Oro the toughest time was Nu’s No. 2 doubles team of Hayley Barton and Becca Hofheinz, who lost in two sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Jr. high girls basketball

Magnolia 38, Union Hill 13

The eighth grade Lady Rattlers captured the Nevada County Athletic League championship in girls basketball with a resounding 38-13 win over the Union Hill Bearcats.

Katelyn Meylor led Magnolia with eight points, while Celeste Card tossed in six. Mallory Rath led rebounding with seven boards. The Rattlers finished the season with a record of 11-1.

The NCAL Girls Basketball Tournament opens up next week.
