PREP ROUNDUP: Nevada Union girls cross country takes 2nd at SFL meet

Nevada Union cross country hosted seven Division I and Division II teams for meet No. 2 of the Sierra Foothill League, coming away with impressive individual wins from senior Nora Pizzella and sophomore Ben Fogiel, who led their respective varsity and junior varsity squads to second place finishes.

Winning the girls varsity race with a huge 19-second lead was Pizzella, finishing the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 51 seconds, a personal best. Erika Wolf was the next Lady Miner coming in fifth with a time of 19:22, followed by Anya Cooper-Hynell coming in 11th at 19:50, Joy Castro-Wehr, 23rd with a time of 20:44, and Claire Berman at 21:40. Rounding out NU’s team score were McKenna Berman (22:52), and Elle Horwath (24:18).

In the ever competitive boys varsity race, senior Miner Josh Harris etched out a personal record with 17:47 finishing 21st out of 82 runners. Myles Montgomery finished with a time of 18:04, followed by Colby Scanlon at 18:19, Tanner Richnak with a time of 20:17, and Michael Kirkpatrick at 22:07.

In combined boys junior varsity and frosh/soph action, Fogiel led the race from the start finishing the 2-mile course in 11:08, a full 19 seconds ahead of the second place runner. Not far behind were Garret Gough in sixth with 11:46, Decker Krough in ninth at 12:02, and Josh Ross in 11th with a time of 12:06. Rounding out the second place team scorers were Christian Portillo with 12:52, Michael Trujillo with 12:57, and Wyatt Gough with 13:39.

Jeralee Groves led the JV and frosh/soph Lady Miners, crossing the finish 10th with 14:40, followed by Sherianne Green, 19th with 15:04, Alyssa Yonanaka, 20th with 15:15, Lylli Davidson 21st with 15:18, Syenna Velasquez with 15:39, Sophia Lehmer with 15:51,and Aubrey Lester with 16:12.

Forest Lake Christian’s girls volleyball team defeated Victory Christian in straight sets, 25-10, 25-11, 25-17, Thursday.

Leading the charge was Alysse Moore with 11 kills and Maddie Switzer with six, Emily O’Neil set 21 assists and scored on 11 aces. Defensively Maddie Switzer and Courtney John combined for five blocks.

Next up for the Lady Falcons is Woodland Christian Tuesday.
