PREP ROUNDUP: Nevada Union boys basketball beats Oak Ridge, extends SFL win streak to four
The Nevada Union boys basketball team made it four straight wins in Sierra Foothill League play Friday, going on the road to top Oak Ridge, 45-41.
The Miners led for much of the game, but in the fourth quarter the Trojans rallied to take the lead at 41-39. Nevada Union responded with a bucket by Jahn Chensee, followed by a Gary Menary score to grab the lead at 43-41.
After a defensive stop by the Miners, the Trojans fouled Chensee, who hit a pair of free throws to ice the game.
Chensee finished with 13 points, Gary Menary tallied 14 and David Menary led all NU scorers with 15 points.
Next up for the Miners (15-7, 4-3 SFL) is a home bout against Granite Bay Wednesday.
JV: Oak Ridge 60, Nevada Union 55
The junior varsity Miners couldn’t get it done Thursday, falling to SFL opponent Oak Ridge by five.
Nevada Union’s Hayden Fay had a strong a game with 20 points, including six 3-pointers. Jack Fraser added 14 points and Dawson Fay netted 11 points.
The Miners (16-6, 3-4 SFL) get back at it Wednesday against Granite Bay.
Placer 66, Bear River 41
After opening the Pioneer Valley League season with a victory over Colfax, the Bruins have now lost four straight league games after falling to Placer Friday night.
The Hillmen built a 36-23 lead by halftime and held off Bear River down the stretch to earn their fifth straight league win.
Bear River 55, Foothill 48
The Lady Bruins took down Pioneer Valley League foe Foothill, 55-48, Thursday night.
The Lady Bruins (14-7, 3-2 PVL) were led by Savannah Wirth with 13 points, three assists, four blocks and three steals. Bear River’s Kaely Rath added 10 points, 12 rebounds and blocked three shots, Katelyn Meylor chipped in 10 points and Kaitlyn Solomon pitched in five points to go with 10 rebounds.
Next up for the Lady Bruins is a home league matchup with Center Wednesday.
JV: Oak Ridge 45, Nevada Union 40
The junior varsity Lady Miners battled Oak Ridge closely all game, but in the end the Lady Trojans pulled away to earn the league win Thursday.
For NU, Mixtli Cortez had a strong game with 25 points, including five 3-pointers. Hannah Lewis added a strong all around game with six points, five assists and four rebounds. Kaleigh Bedell also played well, holding Oak Ridge’s leading scorer to just seven points.
The Lady Miners (12-11, 2-6 SFL) play again Tuesday at home against Granite Bay.
