Prep roundup: Nevada Union baseball wins opening game at Lions tourney

Nevada Union’s baseball team is off to a strong start in San Diego, topping Mater Dei (Chula Vista), 4-1 in the first round of the Lions Tournament.

The Miners were led by a high quality pitching performance from Chris Sardo. The senior threw six quality innings, striking out 12 and allowing one earned run on five hits. Jonathan Finau closed the game out, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Nevada Union had trailed for much of the game, entering the six inning down 1-0, but rallied with four runs in the inning to take the game. The big hit came off the bat of Daniel Lofstrand, who ripped a single that plated the go-ahead runs.

The victory improves the Miners to 5-7 overall. They take the diamond again today against Mission Bay.

The Falcons opened spring break with a lopsided victory over Florin Monday.

Forest Lake Christian was led from the mound by the commanding arm of Hayden Piner. The junior pitched a complete game, striking out 13 along the way. Piner also helped himself out with a double and a run scored on the offensive end.

The Falcons are now 5-2 overall.
