Prep Roundup: Lady Bruins take second in 16-team Dixon Invitational

Bear River’s varsity volleyball team entered as the 10th seed in the 16-team Dixon Invitational Saturday, but advanced to the championship round where the Bruins fell to Del Oro in the finals match.

Bear River defeated Capital Christian and Cosumnes Oaks in morning pool play, and then went 2-1 in the afternoon double-elimination bracket action. The Bruins beat the California School for the Deaf, lost to Inderkum and then went on to defeat Waterford, Capital Christian and Dixon.

Bear River, which went 7-2 on the day, then downed Vacaville Christian in the semifinals, before falling to Del Oro.

Sara Schell had 73 kills on 179 hitting attempts to finish the day with a .418 hitting percentage and 17 service aces. Katie Tomkiewicz had 40 kills on 81 attempts (.407), while Kaya Johnson had 135 assists at setter and Hannah Mosman totaled 40 digs.

According to, Schell is now leading the state in hitting percentage. Tomkiewicz is second to only Schell in hitting percentage in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Bear River (11-3) travels to Forest Lake Christian at 6 p.m. today.

Nevada Union’s varsity girls water polo team posted a 1-3 record Saturday in the Reno Tournament.

After falling to McClatchy 7-1, NU bounced back with a 5-0 win over Bear Creek. The Lady Miners then fell to Utah state champion Kern 13-2, followed by a Los Banos 6-3.

Nevada Union opens Sierra Foothill League action at Roseville today.
