Prep roundup: FLC wins tourney, NU boys wrestle home some medals

The Forest Lake Christian Lady Falcons won the FLC Christmas Tournament this past weekend.

The Lady Falcons’ basketball team protected its home nest over the weekend, winning the Forest Lake Christian Christmas Classic.

Senior guard for Forest Lake Christian Emily Pearce was named the tournament MVP, scoring 13.3 points per game and tallying double-digit steals numbers in each game.

Lauren Piner chipped in with a strong tourney, averaging 12 points per game, and Josey Poppin added 8.7 points per game in the tourney.

FLC beat Western Sierra Collegiate Academy (61-12) and Big Valley Christian (43-18) to advance to the championship where the Lady Falcons toppled Elliot Christian 55-32.

Boys basketball

Forest Lake Christian 68, Sacramento Adventist 41

Fresh off their Faith Christian Tournament win the Falcons of Forest Lake Christian picked right back up Monday, beating Sacramento Adventist by 27.

The Falcons were led by Chase Augustino with 18 points, Christian Dethlefs with 12 and Luke Jordan with 11.

In the Faith Christian Tournament, the Falcons went 3-0 with wins over New Life Christian, Stockton Christian and host Faith Christian.

FLC guard Jordan was named the tourney MVP, and Dethlefs and Augustino were named to the all-tourney team.

JV: Nevada Union 49, Oakmont 37

The Miners salvaged one win from their trip to the Oakmont tournament this past weekend, beating the tourney host by 12 in their final match.

The Miners had lost to Vista del Lago (50-44) and Del Oro (65-55) before notching their victory over the Vikings.

In the loss to Vista del Lago, NU was led by Nick Ortiz and Chance Brown with 10 points each. In the loss to Del Oro Brown scored 18 and in the victory over Oakmont Gary Menary scored 14.

Ortiz was the lone Miner to be named to the All-Tournament team.


3 Miners medal at VDL tourney

A short-handed Miners wrestling team competed at the Vista del Lago tournament with three grapplers taking home medals.

Senior T.J. Hart took third place in the 220-pound weight class, Nate Taylor was fifth in the in the 138-pound class, and Hap Rowe placed sixth in the 113-pound class.

Last year, NU placed second as a team at the Vista del Lago tourney, but this season was only able to compete with a handful of wrestlers due to a flu outbreak that hampered the team, said coach Gary Sumner.
