PREP GOLF: O’Looney wraps decorated senior year
David O’looney concluded a stellar year of high school athletics last week when he faced off with some of the best prep golfers in the region at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Golf Championships.
The senior was the only member of Nevada Union’s golf team to earn a bid to the D-III tourney held at The Ridge in Auburn. He shot a 95 and finished tied for 49th in the 108 player field.
O’Looney led the Miners all season, consistently carding 9-hole rounds in the mid-40s during dual play. He was the lone golfer from NU to earn All-Foothill Valley League honors, which goes to the top-six golfers in the league. He’s the first Miner to earn all-league honors in boys golf since Logan Lowe did so in 2015.
“He was definitely our senior leader,” NU head coach Chris Buti said. “Overall, he was a really consistent player on our team. That’s what we’ve been aiming for is more consistency, and over time it led to that kind of leadership. Whenever you needed him to post a mid-40s score he was pretty good at that.”
The 6-foot, 6-inch O’Looney was also an All-FVL selection in basketball, where he led the Miners in scoring (21.7 per game), rebounding (11.4 per game) and blocks (2.5 per game).
