PREP GOLF: Bear River’s historic season comes to a close

The best season in Bear River girls golf history came to a close Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.

After winning the 2015 Pioneer Valley League title and claiming the school’s first ever Sac-Joaquin Section’s Division IV championship in girls golf, the Lady Bruins competed against the best the section has to offer at the Masters Tournament.

Bear River finished with a team score of 533 on the par-72 course to finish 12th out of 14 teams and ahead of Placer and Capital Christian. Granite Bay won the tourney as a team with a score of 406, Oak Ridge was second with 422 and Rocklin was third with 450 to give the Sierra Foothill League a sweep of the section’s three team berths to the NorCal Tournament. East Union’s Brooke Riley was the day’s medalist with a 71. Placer’s Natalie Pietromonaco scored a 75 and advanced to the NorCal Tournament as one of four individual at-large berths.

Leading Bear River on the day was PVL MVP Hannah Prosser, a freshman, with a 93. Sophomore Bella Betula was next with a 103, freshman Kalei Owen tallied a 104, Shay Poteet shot an 116 and Serenity Edwards rounded out the Lady Bruins score with a 117.

“I am happy with the season,” said Bear River head coach Gayne Nakano. “We accomplished the goals we set and maybe even one more. We’re looking forward to next season.”
