The Pioneer Valley League had an abundance of football talent this year, made evident by sending four of its six teams into the postseason.

While Bear River, Placer, Lincoln and Center are all hard at work preparing for their opening round games Friday, the league announced its All-Pioneer Valley League selections Wednesday.

Despite losing three league games down the stretch, the Bruins still earned eight all league selections, five of which came on the defensive side of the ball.

Earning All-PVL First Team nods from the Bruins defense was senior defensive end Gunnar Simpson (59 tackles, 10 sacks), senior defensive tackle Jimmy Vaughn (40 tackles, four sacks), senior safety Dave Mastrella (64 tackles, two interceptions), senior linebacker Connor Hollister (81 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss), and senior linebacker Beau Baggett, who tallied 66 tackles in just five games.

For Simpson, Vaughn, Hollister and Baggett it was the second time they have been named to an All-PVL team.

On the offensive said of the ball, Bear River’s senior quarterback Jason Voter earned All-PVL First Team honors after throwing for 1,241 yards and 10 touchdowns. Offensive lineman Jason Demostene also earned All-PVL First Team honors. Bear River senior wide receiver Ben O’Lena (28 catches, 52 yards, four touchdowns) was named to the All-PVL second team.

Placer led all teams with 14 All-PVL selections including the league’s offensive and defensive MVPs. The Hillman’s do everything running back Owen Scott (908 rush yards, 712 receiving yards, 24 total touchdowns) was named the league’s offensive MVP, and defensive end Michael Downen (84 tackles, 9.5 sacks) earned the PVL’s defensive MVP.

Lincoln head coach Chris Bean was named co-coach of the year after leading his team to the playoffs and a 6-4 record a year after going 1-9.

Despite finishing at the bottom of the league, Colfax players still earned six All-PVL nods. Making the first team was senior wide receiver Matthew Harshman (60 receptions, 1,055 yards, 13 touchdowns), linebacker Jakob Norad, offensive lineman Jake Stager, and senior running back Lucas Rineer (1,268 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns).

Making the All-PVL second team from Colfax was junior quarterback Austin Weir (1,960 passing yards, 21 touchdowns) and offensive lineman Alec Shafer.

The league offensive and defensive player of the year awards and all-league selections are determined by the coaches from within each league.
