PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Lady Miners take 4th at Crystal Springs invite
Nevada Union’s cross country team traveled to Hallmark Park in Belmont, California Saturday to compete in the Crystal Springs Invitational.
The 2.95 mile course wound around the chaparral covered hillside above San Francisco Bay, where 69 teams competed in 10 races.
Setting the tone for the day were the girls varsity who garnered a fourth place team finish in the championship race. Aptos took the win out of 16 teams. Anya Cooper-Hynell led the Lady Miners finishing eighth out of 114 runners, with a time of 19 minutes, 1 second. Cooper-Hynell was followed by NU’s Erika Wolf in 21st with a time of 20:04, Sherianne Greene in 27th at 20:18, Claire Berman in 37th at 20:54. NU’s McKenna Berman finished with a time of 21:24, and Alyssa Yonenaka with a time of 23:18. Sierra Brill of Lowell took the win in 17:26.
In the championship boys varsity race, 149 runners were fast out of the downhill start. Garrett Gough lead the Miners crossing the finish in 32nd place with a time of 16:30, followed by Decker Krogh in 52nd at 17:01, then Davis Olsen with a time of 17:46, Josh Ross at 18:12, Cameron Richards at 18:19, and James Durkin with a time of 19:29. Alex Scales of Bellarmine won in 15:18. The young NU team placed a respectable 13th out of 21 teams, with Bellarmine finishing first.
In sophmore boys action, the Miners took eighth out of 19 teams, with Sacred Heart Cathedral taking the win. Leading for NU was Wyatt Gough with a time of 19:06, followed by Cayden Hennessey at 19:12, Tynan Douros at 19:25, Joseph Baught at 20:31, and Stephen Hansen with a time of 21:44.
Nevada Union JV girls were Sophia Lehmer finishing with a time of 24:14, Sara Thomas at 24:21, and Marika Wetzel at 37:24.
In the freshman boys race, Cole Barton crossed the line in a time of 19:47, Tali Bensen at 21:22, Ryan Morgan at 21:30, Nate Cater at 21:33, Cole Retzler at 21:34, and Skyler Mims at 22:44.
For the frosh/soph girls Hannah Tiffany came in 15th with a time of 22:40, Jenna Gilbert finished at 23:40, Lylli Davidson at 24:26, Haley McNeeley at 28:30, and Dhara Durkin with a time of 29:05.
A handful of Miners will head to Fresno over Fall break for the Rough Rider Invite on 10/14, with Sierra Foothill League Championships slated for Oct. 28 in Rocklin.
