PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Bear River makes strides at PVL Championships

The Bear River cross country team wrapped up the league season in good form Wednesday as the boys team placed third and the girls team took fourth at the Pioneer Valley League Championships.

Placer won both the boys and girls PVL team championships.

Competing at the 12-Bridges cross country course in Lincoln, the Lady Bruins were led by Viviana Chavez with a sixth place finish in a time of 20 minutes, 37 seconds. Chavez earned All-PVL honors for her effort. Bear River’s Anna Larson also turned in a good race, finishing in the top-15 with a season-best time of 21:48.

For the girls team, the fourth place finish emphasizes just how far the team has come. In 2014, Bear River didn’t even field a team, and last year the Lady Bruins placed last at the PVL Championships.

On the boys side, it was J.P. Bzorek leading the Bruins with an eighth place finish in a time of 17:27. Bzorek also earned All-PVL honors. Fellow Bruin harrier Brekyn Vasquez, a freshmen, also had a solid race with a 12th-place finish in a time of 17:43. Vasquez’s time was the fastest among all freshmen at the meet.

Bear River will now set its sights on the Sac-Joauin Section Sub-Section meet Nov. 5 at Frogtown in Angels Camp.
