PREP ALPINE SKI/SNOWBOARDING: Nevada Union girls putting pressure on Davis

Racing slalom at Boreal on Monday, the Nevada Union girls alpine ski team once again garnered a tie for first place with Davis.

The Lady Miners put three racers in the top-10 and a total of four made it into the top-13. Leading NU was Sarah Brennan with a third-place individual finish. Brennan tallied a two-race combined score of 1 minute, 29.98 seconds. Zoe Cohen was next for NU, placing sixth with a time of 1:36.87. Senior Quinn Heppe placed 10th for the Lady Miners, earning a time of 1:44.26. Tera Arenchild came in 13th for NU with a time of 1:47.53.

With just one giant slalom competition left in the regular season, the Lady Miners are just three points behind Davis in the CNISSF Central II Division standings. The last regular season race for the girls and boys teams are set for Feb. 19 at Sugar Bowl.

On the boys side Monday, the Miners were led by senior Peter McDowell’s second-place individual finish. McDowell was in first place after his first run, but was edged out after the second run. McDowell finished with a two-race combined time of 1:15.75, just .2 seconds behind Del Oro’s Noah Mott (1:15.55).

Josh Harris was next for the Miners, placing ninth with a time of 1:29.06. Jake Schlothauer placed 19th for NU with a time of 1:38.09, and Jack Wright was 25th with a time of 1:43.05.

In Junior varsity action, Nevada Union’s Duncan Hendrickson placed 14th with a time of 1:53.47 in the men’s open division.


Nielson leads NU at Alpine Meadows

Competing at Alpine Meadows, the Nevada Union boys snowboard team placed two in the top-10 and five in the top-20 in the third slalom race of the season Monday.

The Miners were led by Simon Nielson with a ninth-place individual finish. Nielson finished with a two-race combined time of 1:17.77, which was just .67 seconds off the pace of the seventh place finisher. NU’s Cyrus Malin placed 10th with a time of 1:19.21. Benny Gemetti was next for the Miners with a 13th place finish at 1:21.24. NU’s Kevin Mathiesen took 15th with a time of 1:21.52, Logan Smith earned 18th at 1:23.97 and Roman Telles placed 20th with a time of 1:25.88.

Also racing for NU was Brady Turner (20th), Bowen Kyle (22nd), and Nate Campbell (35th).

On the girls side, Nevada Union was led by Rachael Peach in 14th place with a time of 1:39.56. Elle Horwath was next for the Lady Miners, placing 16th at 1:40.8. Bethany Sumner earned 21st for NU, Devan Lackey finished in 28th and Eliza Rowe came in 31st.

Nevada Union gets back at it Friday for a giant slalom event at Alpine Meadows.
