Pool to open for public use

With Bear River’s new swimming pool now complete, the Bruins won’t be the only group of people to benefit.

Bear River Parks and Recreation’s Doug Reed announced that the pool will be open from 1-3 p.m. Saturdays, starting April 21. The pool will also be open to the public on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6-8 p.m.

The purpose will be for adult lap swimming and is not meant for children. For the first three weeks the pool will be available for free. Starting on May 12 cost will be $4 per day or $35 for a 10-day pass.

Following the school year, once the Bear River swim team is done using the pool, Reed is hoping to open the pool up for many more uses. He hopes to include youth swim lessons, a possible youth club program, an adult masters program, expanded adult lap swim hours and maybe even scuba and kayak lessons.

One area that remains undecided at this point is open swim times for children.

“This is a competition swimming pool,” Reed said. “It’s not like Memorial (Park) pool where there are plenty of shallow areas. Lane one is shallow at 41Ú2 feet, but it drops off sharply from there to seven and then 12 feet.

“It’s definitely a pool for strong swimmers. It’s not a drop-the-kids-and-let-them-swim-for-the-day pool.”
