Playoff roundup: NU boys run to sixth at sections, girls wrap up in seventh

Nevada Union’s varsity boys cross country team scored a sixth-place finish Friday at the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships at Willow Hills Reservoir in Folsom.

Cody Hood led the Miners with a 26th-place finish in 17:52, while Parker Brown was right behind in 27th place in 18:01.

Davis won the Division I title, totaling 15 points to second-place Modesto’s 77. Sheldon was third with 90, Napa fourth with 107 and Grace Davis fifth with 136.

Nevada Union totaled 144, ahead of seventh-place Elk Grove (148) and eighth-place Tokay (190).

Also placing for NU were Chris Greiner in 38th (18:20), Scott Valentine in 43rd (18:28), Dan Freitas in 46th (18:35), Sean Lane in 47th (18:35) and Ross Brennan was 59th (19:25).

Nevada Union’s varsity girls finished seventh. Davis won the Division I girls title with 23 points, while Franklin was second with 77 and Sheldon third with 90 points.

The Miners were led by Hannah Harrison’s 36th place finish in 22:17. Laura Rodrigues was 38th in 22:18, Erinn Ramirez 45th in 22:48 and Hannah Webb 46th in 22:51. Allison Chapple took 57th place (23:49) and Hayley Gilligan 65th (26:13).

Stephen Sarantopoulos took 19th place for Nevada Union the Junior Varsity boys race, in which the Miners took fifth place. Travis Randall was 27th, Tyler Welden 34th, Dan Roediger 35th, Charles Raube 42nd, Tyler Green 44th and Chris Humphries 45th.

Tristan Trotter finished 15th in the Freshmen boys race, while Ben Menzies was 28th for the Miners. Grayson Curtis finished 16th in the Sophomore boys race.


Forest Lake Christian’s soccer team is playing at 10 a.m. today in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI championship at Folsom High School, while the volleyball teams of Nevada Union and FLC are hosting the section semifinal matches Tuesday.

The Falcons (20-3-3), who earned the top seed from the Central Valley Christian League, defeated Le Grand 4-2 in a penalty-kick shootout Thursday to advance to the championship. Lindhurst (11-2-1), the top seed from the Golden Empire League, beat Turlock Christian 2-1 Thursday to advance.

Directions to Folsom High School (1655 Iron Point Rd.) – From I-80 toward Sacramento, turn left onto Sierra College Blvd. Turn right onto Auburn Folsom Rd., which becomes Folsom Auburn Rd. and then American River Bridge. After American River Bridge becomes Folsom Blvd., turn left onto Blue Ravine Rd., right onto Prairie City Rd., then left onto Iron Point Rd.


The No. 1 Miners (29-6) host No. 4 Yuba City (34-7) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in their run to win a fifth-straight section crown. NU beat Napa 3-0 Thursday in the quarterfinals, after Tuesday’s first-round win against Modesto.

Forest Lake Christian’s volleyball team, another No. 1 seed, hosts No. 13 Ripon Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Ripon Christian won 3-0 Thursday at Stone Ridge Christian. The Falcons, who lost game one Thursday night, recovered to beat Victory Christian 3-1.
