Penn Valley opens with shutout win

Battling injuries and the flu bug, Penn Valley’s Major All-Stars still managed to open California Section 4 Little League Tournament action in impressive fashion Thursday, shutting out Antelope National 4-0 at Tri-City Little League in Rocklin.

Tanner Vallejo and Dusty Zeisler combined to throw a three-hitter for the win. Vallejo drew the start after Zeisler, who had planned to pitch the opener, was hit with a bit of the flu bug, said Penn Valley manager Rich Benevento.

“(Vallejo) came in and pitched very strong,” Benevento said. “His curveball was working. His fastball was working. He was just lights out for five innings.”

In those five frames, Vallejo struck out seven while allowing one hit. Zeisler came on in relief, striking out three while allowing two hits in one inning of action.

At the plate, Vallejo was 2-for-3 hitting, while Zeisler, Jared Cook and Joey Benevento each singled. Ignacio Recendez came up with a key RBI single to put Penn Valley up 2-0.

Three players were battling injuries in the game, but their manager said the team came together to come up with “a big win for Penn Valley and District 11.”

The win moved Penn Valley into the winner’s bracket final, which will be played at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Tri-City Little League.
