Nevada Union’s Luke Ridens threw his name in with the best high school cross country runners in the state with a strong performance at the CIF Division I State Meet at Hayward Park in Fresno Saturday.

The junior was the first of the seven Miners to cross the finish line, finishing the 3.1 mile course in a personal-best time of 16 minutes, 26 seconds for 65th place.

“I had an awesome first mile, then ran a strong second mile, but I would have to liked to pick it up a little more in the third,” he said. “It felt a lot different than any other race I’d ever been in. It’s big. I felt like a gladiator in a ring.”

Nevada Union’s Kris Sulonen nabbed his team-leading 9th sack of the year in the Miners 65-21 win over Florin in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I quarterfinals Friday.

The 5-foot, 10-inch, 160-pound linebacker is also tied with linebacker Travis Toll for second on the team in fumble recoveries with two.
