Michelle Mathis lifelong dream of playing college softball came true with the stroke of a pen Monday.

The Bear River senior accepted a partial scholarship from St.Mary’s College in Moraga.

“I had planned on applying there anyway, so it just happened to work out,” she said. “I chose St. Mary’s because it’s small, it’s not too far from home and it’s a division I school.”

Mathis, who plans to study either primary education or child psychology, said all of those long hours on the softball diamond have paid off.

“I’ve spent my entire life playing softball and it all leads up to where you’re going to play in college. It’s such a relief to finally know,” she said.

Forest Lake Christian’s Melody Bayless went down swinging in her high school volleyball finale.

The senior middle hitter tied teammate Micah Violet for the team-high in blocks with nine in the Lady Falcons’ Sac-Joaquin Section Division V semifinal loss to host Woodland Christian Nov. 14.

Amanda Benson was the picture of perfection in the Nevada Union girls volleyball teams Sac-Joaquin Section Divsion I title showdown with St. Mary1s (Stockton) at the University of California, Davis Nov. 16.

The sophomore was second on the team with nine digs and had no passing errors as the Lady Miners beat the eight-time section champs in three games.

“I thought she had a great game for us. She really played beyond her years,” NU head coach Bob Rogers said.
