Optimist all-star volleyball tonight

Eight western Nevada County volleyball players were selected to play in the 2006 Optimist All-Star game tonight at El Camino High School in Sacramento.

The boys match will kick off the night at 5 p.m., with the opening serve for the girls set for 25 minutes after the boys finish.

Only seniors are selected to play in the game, which consists of a team made up of players from the northern part of the Sacramento area and the other team made up of players from the southern part of the Sacramento area.

Bear River middle blocker Corey Tofte was selected to play for the North squad, while Nevada Union players Graham Davis (outside hitter), Sam Hochwald (outside hitter), Vince Cancilla (outside hitter), Truk Jantz (middle blocker) and Tim Lamphier (libero) will suit up for the South. Hochwald, however, will not play as he is still recovering from a broken bone in his wrist.

It may seem strange for the two schools to be playing on different teams considering they are located so close to each other, but teams were chosen based on which league a school is assigned. The Metro League, which Nevada Union is technically a part of, is considered a South league.

Joining the Nevada Union athletes will be five players from Jesuit and one from Florin. The North team has players from Granite Bay, Placer, Rocklin and Roseville in addition to Tofte.

“In the South there aren’t as many teams with programs to choose from,” Nevada Union boys volleyball coach Kelly Rhoden said. “It really wasn’t easy to pick teams. We originally wanted to have two players from every school, but some schools don’t have varsity teams and some don’t have any seniors.

“We wanted it to be a good game, so we ended up just picking the best seniors from the area.”

Two Nevada Union players were selected to play in the girls game – setter Nicole Williams and libero Claire Tovar – but only Tovar will participate. Both were starters on the Miners’ Northern California runner-up and Sac-Joaquin Section championship team from the fall.

Tovar will play on the South team coached by Alynn Wright of St. Francis.
