On to the finals

In the second meeting between the Nevada City and Sierra Foothills Major-division All Star teams Thursday at Bear River, both were facing elimination.

After being pounded by Nevada City Tuesday night, Sierra Foothills came close to redeeming itself, but its comeback, which put the game into extra innings, was destroyed by a five-run seventh as Nevada City prevailed 11-6.

Sierra Foothills put Nevada City in a hole early taking a 4-1 advantage after two innings, but Nevada City quickly put more runs on the board.

In the third inning, Nevada City had come within two runs, and in the fourth Ryan Conger drove in the tying run after Dillon Hadley had scored on a passed ball.

From that point on it looked as though Nevada City was going to cruise to another win, scoring two more runs in the fifth to take a two-run lead while Nevada City’s pitcher, Conger, was shutting down Sierra Foothills.

Down 6-4 going into the sixth, Sierra Foothills players had their heads hung low. After three consecutive hits – the third one tying the game – their chins were held higher knowing they had sent the game into extra innings.

With a five-run seventh inning, Nevada City looked as it had Monday, when it shut out Sierra Foothills 10-0. Carrying that momentum into the bottom of the inning, Conger again came up with clutch pitching as he got three-straight batters to ground out, sending Sierra Foothills home for the remainder of the season and keeping Nevada City’s head above water.

“(Sierra Foothills) came out hard,” Nevada City manager Brian Harrison said. “They looked a lot different than they did the last time we played them.

“It became an uphill climb for us.”

Bear River 14, Grass Valley 2

Coming off of a 5-4 win Wednesday night against Nevada City, Bear River appeared to be the team to beat as it hosted Grass Valley in a Nevada County showdown. After winning 14-2, Bear River will bring only more fear to future opponents.

Grass Valley broke the ice as it posted the first run in the first inning, but the lead, which was expanded to two runs in the second, quickly evaporated with a six-run second inning for Bear River.

Grass Valley could not find its way past the plate the rest of the game, while Bear River found itself leaping over with ease, scoring another run in the fourth and seven in the fifth, capped off by a Morgan Juric grand slam which gave Bear River the advantage of the ten-run rule.

“I was just hoping to get a base hit,” Juric said. “There were two outs and I just wanted to hit.”

Grass Valley’s pitching staff took most of the blame for the loss, giving up a combined 11 hits and five walks. The pitching of Grass Valley was made to look worse by that of Bear River.

Nolan Lewis pitched the complete game picking up four strikeouts along the way, while allowing five hits and three walks. Lewis also batted 1 for 4 in the game and had an RBI.

Juric had the biggest performance offensively for Bear River with his 2-for-3, 4-RBI night. Chris Wermes, Zach Welz, and Brandon Fry also each batted 2 for 3.

For Grass Valley Scott Britton had a solid night with the bat, going 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI. Anthony Olivas and Matt Blesio each had doubles.
