NU swim team off to Fresno

The Nevada Union swimming team has an opportunity this weekend to face new and most likely more intense competition at one of the best high school swimming venues in the state at the Clovis West Invitational in Fresno.

John Sultan and his swimming team will join more than 40 teams at the meet in hopes of showcasing the talent the Miners have this season.

“This is a great chance to race against teams and individuals that we don’t normally race against,” Sultan said. “It will be a fresh approach for the kids because they don’t have to be concerned about competitors they know – they can just get out there and race.

“It’s also a big plus to race in a big meet venue that will be good preparation for the sectional and league meets.”

Clovis West looks to be one of the favorites for both boys and girls, with the girls team from Archbishop Mitty from San Jose also expected to field a strong team.

Sultan is confident that all three of his boys relay teams, comprised of Drew Harris, Jon Huffman-Eddy, Jason Stefani, Jordan Golnik and Jason Wethern, have a shot at placing in the top three, if not winning the races.

Two relays teams made up of Whitney Stephenson, Allison Chambers, Caitlin Lee and Colleen Heauser also look to challenge for meet titles.

“I also think that Harris, Stephenson and Huffman-Eddy should be able to contend for meet titles in their individual events,” Sultan said.

The 16-lane pool at Clovis West will welcome teams from Bakersfield to Santa Cruz to San Luis Obispo – with the majority of central California teams competing.
